No messenger came. Tens of thousands of people had attended the weeklong festival, and by the look of things, every one of them had come to the cathedral. The soldiers who had ridden alongside our carriage cleared a path for us.

The people cheered as first King Sandro and then Queen Corinna stepped down from the carriage. The Esquavetians sang “Esquaveta Eternal.” Not to be outdone, the Oxatanians broke into a song of their own.

The coachman set out a stool for me, which he hadn’t done for either the king or the queen, then held my arm as I descended. It was somewhat embarrassing. Just because I fell one time!

By the time I was on solid ground, soldiers had already escorted the king and queen up the stone stairs of the cathedral. Meanwhile, the singing had devolved into a shouting match between the Esquavetians and the Oxatanians.

My shoes were too long for the stairs. I had to turn my feet sideways as I ascended the fourteen steps.
